MUD- Multi-user dungeon, where many people gather to play games, have discussions, study and so on.
Newbie- Someone new to the internet.
Clueless Newbie-Aggressively ignorant Newbie.
Netiquette -The etiquette on the Internet.
Netizen -Derived from the term citizen, referring to a citizen of the Internet, or someone who uses networked resources.
Nerd or Geek- Someone who actually understands how a computer works.
Newsgroups - A general name given to a vast collection of public access bulletin boards.
Oldbie- A Net user who flames Newbies or just won't help them with their questions.
POP-(Post Office Protocol) - This is the system that your mail server uses to allows you to collect your mail and download to your computer.
Portal -Usually used as a marketing term to described a Web site that is or is intended to be the first place people see when using the Web. Typically a "Portal site" has a catalog of web sites, a search engine, or both.
Surfing the web- Spending time using the Internet.
Server-The computer that provides the space for home pages and other Internet addresses.
Shouting- Typing messages IN ALL CAPS.
Signature- A file to be appended to mail and news messages automatically. It should contain no more than 4 lines of up to 80 characters of text. Excessive signatures will be ridiculed.
SMTP-Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) - The system by which Internet mail is transferred from computer to computer.
Snail mail - Mail delivered by a postal service or any other physical delivery of paper mail. Spam (or Spamming)- Sending the same message to a large number of people who didn't ask for it.
TCP/IP-Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol. The method of communication between Internet computers.
Thread -A message together with the replies to it, replies to the replies, and so on.
Tube- Computer monitor or Screen.
URL-(Uniform Resource Locator) - This is the "address" of pages on the Web.
Web Site -A web site is a group of "pages" interconnected. These can be commercial, educational, or personal and range in size from a few pages - to dozens of pages.
